Create a
Focal Point in Any Room
When you walk into a room or interior space, you’ll feel
more comfortable if your eye can rest on a main feature.
That main feature is called the “focal point” of the
room.
If your room has a beautiful picture window looking out
to a lovely garden, that’s it. If you have a fireplace,
large or small, that will be the focal point in that
room.
Sometimes a room has no distinguishing feature built in
and you have to create one. Some ideas of focal points
that you can add to a room:
•
An armoire or other tall, large cabinet
•
A beautiful oriental or patterned rug
•
A table with a collection of interesting pieces on it
•
A dramatic mirror or fabric panel
•
A collection hung on the wall, such a musical
instruments, family photos, umbrellas, or decorative
hats
•
A large open storage shelf with collectibles
interspersed with books and plants
The point of creating a focal point is to select
something to invite the visitor to linger and enjoy.
Change the Look of a Room with New Seasonal Décor
You can give any room a fresh seasonal décor by making
some small changes.
•
Alternate two sets of covers or decorative
pillows-some for spring/summer and others for
fall/winter.
•
Order reversible drapery panels so they can easily be
turned with the changing of the seasons.
•
A plain ivory that reverses to a more colorful pattern
gives great options for the seasons.
•
When displaying plates, change them seasonally.
•
Pretty florals can be traded out for holiday plates
when the weather turns cool.
•
Switch a light throw with a cozier one for cooler
seasons.
•
Change a cool cotton matelasse bed cover for a warmer
down duvet.
•
Change floral arrangement displays seasonally.
•
Remove spring themed silk flower arrangements as soon
as summer is over.
•
Replace them with fall colored pieces accented with
fall leaves and fruit.
Paint a
Hallway Any Color You Want
When choosing color for a small space like a hallway or
entry, be brave. Choose a color you love
and don’t think about whether it’s practical or safe.
Black, red, navy blue, or orange are wild choices but
could really make a statement in a small space.
Keep in mind that you’ll only be walking through this
small space, so you’ll smile every time you
breeze by.
Find
Storage Space in Hidden Places
Small apartments and condos often do not have sufficient
storage space. Try these tips for finding hidden spaces
for storage in your home:
•
A skirted table can camouflage a file cabinet,
storage boxes, or even a television.
•
A lowboy can serve as a bedside table to store
linens, stationery, or cosmetics.
•
A narrow cabinet can store games, DVDs and even
stereo components.
•
A shallow, rolling box will fit under the bed to
store out-of-season clothes, sweaters, and linens.
Customize Your Decorative Accessories
Home decorative accessories can take on a designer look
with just a few special touches.
Here are some ideas:
•
Use a glue gun to attach a beautiful braid to the top
and bottom edge of a lamp shade.
•
Hang a colorful tassel on the door or drawer pull of
a china cabinet.
•
A pretty wired French ribbon tied to the base of a
lamp adds color and is a treat for the eye.
•
Hang beautiful plates on the wall connected with the
color-coordinated decorative ribbon.
•
Glue fringe or braid to the top edge of a
wastebasket.
